i think it is very good, on m way i tend to keep it 60 65 in 5th gear any lower and the car will die, you have to keep it around 3000 revs and it will go along very happy in top gear, i get around 28 mpg out of my car. at the end of the day you have to use your head get he car in the right gear and you keep the car moving i v passed big 4x4 going up hills on m ways and the look you get is brill, very good car

Not a problem pulling this size caravan - I made sure not to have the boot estate loaded as the rear can drop a bit with weight. I loaded caravan so it was pretty well balanced too. Did 80kph not a problem

j Thompson reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 1.8 16v (92 Kw/123 bhp). Modelyear: february 2002 - june 2007) and a Elddis Xplore 452 of 1165 kg.

The whattow car review has it about right. We went to France and covered over 1400 miles towing. Not the slightest problem on the flat but much gear changing on the hills. A bit of a pain but no real problem.

We did take great care to pack light and level.

Having gone out for a coffee we ended up buying a new tourer! I didn't want to change cars as well. However, when I do change I will upgrade to a 2.0 tdci.

Ford Mondeo - 1.8 16v with a Sprite

S Hudson reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 1.8 16v (92 Kw/123 bhp). Modelyear: february 2002 - june 2007) and a Sprite Musketeer EB of 1152 kg.

Just collected our new van form Lowe and Rhodes in Stoke, spent a night in thepeak district and then drove back to Stockton on Tees, averaged about 60mph approx 30mpg all the way, struggled slighty on the hills over the pennines M62, and had to let the trucks overtake me, probably down to this being my first van and not using the gears correctly, but on the flat had no trouble overtaking.

Ford Mondeo - 1.8 16v [1995-2000] with a Sprite

RUSSELL LANGTON reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 1.8 16v [1995-2000] (85 Kw/114 bhp). Modelyear: october 1996 - january 2000) and a Sprite Alpine 2 of 875 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 71%* = 85 km/u = 9%

car has sufficient pulling power, i find that most of the guts of the car are in 3rd gear, does struggle slightly on hills due to lack of nose weight on car, 5th gear is not useable under 55 mph, but at 60mph on dual carriageways the car runs great in 5ty gear and averages about 30 mpg, i found that i needed a drop plate on the car to lower the caravan to stop BOBBING as the caravan was rear heavy due to end kitchen, apparently very common problem on the mk 2 mondeo as the towbar goes through the bumper and not under it(mk1 and mk3 i've seen). hope this helps with any other mondeo mk2 owners, believe me! Buy a drop plate and lower your towbar, get 65kg nose weight on the van and feel the difference!!!.

Ford Mondeo - 1.8 TD with a Knaus

Djeek reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 1.8 TD (66 Kw/88 bhp). Modelyear: october 1996 - november 2000) and a Knaus Sport 450 FU of 1215 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 94%* = 77 km/u = 12%

This report is pretty accurate. It is according to my experience for driving this combination now for 2 years.
The engine is underpowered as soon as you hit a slope. Even a faint one. 5th gear is not used when driving with a caravan.
Full consuption solo is 1 liter to 16 km, where with the Knaus Sport 450 on the hook, 1 to 9/10 is reachable.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v with a Fleetwood

Very pleased with this set up. Comfortable car, pulls well, around 30 mpg. Important to keep to the recomended nose weight. Best buy was a TomTom.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v aut. with a Swift

Ken B reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v aut. (107 Kw/143 bhp). Modelyear: november 2000 - june 2007) and a Swift Charisma 550 of 1401 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 100%* = 90 km/u = 15%

My caravan is a Swift Charisma 550 and my Mondeo 2.0 Ghia Auto does struggle. ( so much so I am looking to change it ). It is ok on the flat but on long hills it finds it hard to cope and I have noticed a burning smell from the transmission unit. It does not pick up enough to enable you to overtake with confidence on a motorway.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v aut. with a Avondale

Daisy B reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v aut. (107 Kw/143 bhp). Modelyear: november 2000 - june 2007) and a Avondale Dart 510-5 of 1210 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 83%* = 95 km/u = 15%

My caravan is an Avondale Mayfair ( dart) 515/4, my mondoe is a 2ltr 1.6v Petrol Auto.
The car is more than happy to take the caravan anywhere steep hills it loves, the only problems I have is 1/its petrol and 2/ its a front wheel drive that struggles for traction.
I am so happy with this combination that I will not be swopping just looking for a diesel. and many happy miles to come.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v aut. with a Bailey

Mr T CLARK reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v aut. (107 Kw/143 bhp). Modelyear: november 2000 - june 2007) and a Bailey Ranger 460/4 of 1172 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 80%* = 93 km/u = 15%

My caravan is a bailey ranger 460/4 series 6 2009, i have a 1997 2.016v auto. The car tows brilliantly straight and true. plenty of power, and still getting 27mpg. if i had one critisism it would be it can tend to get hot up steep very long hills.however i have put in a 3 way switch so i can manually operate the cooling fan. perfect! this fault i had with other mondeos same yr. dont worry though, easy 10 min fix it must be one of the best towcars for 400.well recommended. check autobox is sound 88k max or it must have been replaced if not walkaway 1000 to fix. hope this helps

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v aut. with a Avondale

Mr C Medhurst reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 2.0 16v aut. (107 Kw/143 bhp). Modelyear: november 2000 - june 2007) and a Avondale Avocet of 1344 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 97%* = 92 km/u = 15%

My caravan is an Avondale Avocet which I tow with a 2002 2.0 Ltr Mondeo petrol Auto. Apparently according to the info I have found on the net this caravan is to heavy for the car, but in the two years I have had this caravan I have found the Mondeo to be an excellent tow car. It has not put a foot wrong and pulls the caravan with ease, this may be due to us probably due to only taking what we need and never overloading the car or the caravan. I am only now considering selling the car due to requiring a bigger caravan.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Ace

The towing capability for this outfit is:

I have only recently purchased this caravan but it seems to pull the caravan with no effort. The Mondeo is a much better towcar than my previous Galaxy 2.3 petrol

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Coachman

Darren Jukes reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi (96 Kw/129 bhp). Modelyear: october 2001 - september 2003) and a Coachman Amara 520/4 of 1385 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 97%* = 100 km/u = 21%

This car has fantastic pulling power, but I think at around 57-58mph 5th gear is no good as the engine is idling, I always stay in 4th and achieve 32-35 mpg constantly whilst towing and around 50 mpg when solo.
Caravan sits really well on the roads and is easy to manouvre for such a hefty van.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Swift

tows quite well but not as well as our bailey ranger 470/4 worth changing gears more often though for the better quality van. phil dilley tows 520/4 with his which amazes me as van is heavier than car

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Swift

I have been towing caravans for 20 years and have not found a more stable combination.
Both car & caravan 1st class combo.
Dont forget that when towing, a steady accelaration is
always the best and safest way and the same when breaking.

This car has no problems at all towing the swift, sometimes you forget it is there. I always stay in 4th gear and average 35mpg which is great. I have the 130hp and it still really pulls away quite quickly when needed. All ways handy on slip roads onto the motorway.

Towing a 2001 Compass Rallye 490/4L. Need to drop to 4th when going up long motorway gradients, but otherwise, it pulls away well and apart from using a bit more diesel, goes fine.
M54 past Telford(the hill before you see Wales), got stuck in traffic jam last year, put it in first, let the clutch out, feet off the pedal, sat back and enjoyed the scenery.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Swift

towing the swift,(a different model than metioned but couldn't find mine listed so this was nearest) the mondeo is unerved. once moving i don't really notice the caravan on the back! its very light, and with a stabaliser very simply to tow. my first outing with this outfit was longleat, 200 miles from home, and we arrived 20 minutes later than google maps suggest (without caravan) the car didnt struggle once.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Swift

A superb tow car, and I should know having competed in a number of caravan road rallies when they were allowed many years ago, the car has lots of power for overtaking ( don't tell anyone but recently to pass a row of 6 trucks which were nose to tail on a motorway, to get by and back into the n/s lane I had it up to 80 mph) with no ill effects in fact I wondered how fast it would go.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Bailey

towing the bailey was a breeze, even driving up twisty mountain roads not a problem,a great pulling car,not to hard on the diesel either

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Bailey

Tony reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi (96 Kw/129 bhp). Modelyear: october 2001 - september 2003) and a Bailey Senator Indiana of 1464 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 94%* = 99 km/u = 20%

The 130 mondeo is not only the best tow car I have owned, pound for pound it is the best value car I have owned. Coupled to the Senator it has no problems, except minor traction problems in the wet (older LX model with no traction control). The car is 6 years old with 110,000 miles on the clock, and still out performs 'boy racers' when solo.

130 mondeo is excellent at towing ace firestar.although this is a 94% match in the uk I have had no problems whatsoever. loading and noseweight must be correct.

before I purchased the van I was told that my car can tow 1.525kgs and my car was ok ? I drove down to west wales and back, no problem, but I can't help thinking is the ratio between car and caravan to close for comfort.

Although this van looks way too heavey for the mondeo it pulls it great !!
Cannot believe more people are not using a chip to improve the performace ???
mine does 55mpg (no van) and 32mpg towing this huge 23 foot beast !!
like others say ...put the cruse on ...the aircon on ....and sit back and and watch the miles go by ...

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi with a Swift

Dave Pardoe reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi (85 Kw/114 bhp). Modelyear: november 2000 - june 2007) and a Swift Challenger SE 480 of 1366 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:

Excellent combination. Previously had a Freelander TD4 and although the Freelander felt slightly more firm and stable the advantages of pulling the van and everyday use with the Mondeo far outweigh it. Went down to the French Alps this summer ( 1,800 miles) and car returned 34 mpg and 55 mpg normal use. The journey time compared to Freelander was better than previous yr- might be cos I got to know some short cuts! Found it best to inflate tyres to 34 front and 36 rear whilst towing for firmer, less wallowing, ride. Never been stuck on wet/ muddy site but always loads of help available.

changed upto to a swift 5 birth Allohuette from a 2 birth. thought it was going to be very different but harldy any change. the car performance is faultless, still returning 35-40 mpg on both motorway or A/B roads. highly recommend this style of car, dont need a big 150hp, just plenty of torque! its stable, feels safe and even the wife takes turns in driving.

Had this outfit for 3 years with no problems. The auto box is excellent and handles the van well round town. Sometimes need to manually select gears on country roads to avoid constant downshifting. Very stable and plenty of power for most situations. Get 30 to 35 mpg when towing.

Only issue was when towing to Spain over the Pyrennees fully laden in 35 degree heat and on steep long mountain climbs the engine protection did cut in to stop overheating. However taking it more steady would have probably avoided this, so the turbo was not being used. There were also plenty of lorries who were also struggling to get up the hills climbing at 5 to 10 mph. So it was more to do with the extreme conditions then the car.

I also upgraded the rear springs to MAD suspension as the rear did sit very low.

Overall, I would recommend the car we a similar van as it performs excellent solo and with the van on the back. Best auto box I have ever driven.

This car and caravan match is ideal. I have been to Belgium France and Holland covering many miles of motorway, and the car has performed its duty with ease. There is no worry about the power when pulling out of junctions. The car sticks to the road when cornering. I could go on and on but I won't, All I will say is the 130bhp mondeo is a joy to tow with.

Towing a swift challenger 400SE in Italy was great with our Mondeo TDCI estate until we tried to cross from the east coast (Vieste) to Rome on a very hot day (42 degrees) at altitude (2000 metres or so) when I had to drop to 3rd gear and keep below 40mph just to prevent overheating, the warning for which is that the aircon shuts down!

I have a mondeo 130 TDCI fitted with a towing chip. The outfit is very stable and we caravan all year and have had no problems without a 4x4. Before I had the chip around 32mpg was the norm with the van on I now average 40mpg and 60mpg solo. The extra torque is helpful on motorways. Just need to be careful with the nose weight. An absolute joy!!

My first experience of towing a caravan has been absolutely no problem with the Mondeo LX 2.0 TDCI 130 bhp. The Lunar Stellar is quite lightweight compared to some and is perfectly matched with the Mondeo. If anyone is considering towing for the first time, you won't go wrong with this combination!

I tow a 1990 Buccaneer Elan 14 with my 03 2.0 TDCI Ghia X hatch. Tows very well with plenty of power throughout the first 5 gears, if not to much! easy to forget you have a caravan behind you at times. 6th gear is only achievable driving illegally over 60mph, at 60mph th engine labours in 6th. Set the cruise control at 55-60 in 5 gear and the miles disappear effortlessly. Economy excellent. Managed 35 mpg towing from Burnley to the Lakes. Only critism is the Mondeo diesels notoriously jumpy clutch from setting off, very easy to stall with or without a caravan.

I tow with an 05 Mondeo 2.0ltr tdci ghia x pulling a Swift Islay 1411Kg and have no trouble at all 1st to 5th but it does not like 5th gear.Fuel returns 33 to the gallon on Scottish roads.I agree with Mr Kayley on the clutch and the fact you can forget about the van.

I have an 03 Tdci Ghia X saloon Mondeo 130BHP and it is the first towing car I have bought that is a dream. Acceleration and driving with the Abbey Vogue 540 is effortless and pulls in all conditions. Good fuel consumption 35 mpg towing A roads, close to 40 average on motorways and without the van, you can get 60-64 mpg on motorways. It's a shame that you cannot use 6th gear much as this would give you brilliant fuel consumption. Experienced first serious hill start last weekend when stopped at Callowtop Hill Caravan park near Ashbourne, entrance is 1 in 5 hill. As soon as traction control kicked in, it was easy to move away without the smell of burning clutch and tyres. I would highly recommend this towing outfit.

Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] with a Bailey

Paul Astell reviewed a Ford Mondeo - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] (96 Kw/129 bhp). Modelyear: september 2003 - june 2007) and a Bailey Ranger 460 of 1139 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 73%* = 97 km/u = 20%

I can't add too much to the above. Having only towed with 1.6L petrols previously this car is in a different league. The only possible issue is as previously mentioned about the clutch. It is sometimes quite easy to stall in a careless moment and can take a while for engine speed to pick up for take off. This is only seconds of course but in the panic of the moment is seems longer. 6th gear is very possible between 50-60mph (or higher abroad) but it's not unreasonable to expect to drop to 5th up an incline. The other problem is keeping within speed limits!

Hi we tow a coachman genius 1994 , mtplm 1200kgs and have found very good towing performance's between the ford mondeo 2001 model TDDI 115bhp , hill climbing is very good and stable , in reasonable high winds (with the aid of a stabiliser ) is also very good balenced outfit , top speeds on motorways of 60mph are very easily reached and stable at those speeds , i would rate this mondeo a good match , especially at these weights.

Bought the mondeo cheap! my C5 138bhp gave up after limp-mode problems and 800 in bills absolutely loved the C5 120k. BUT! the mondeo has been a dream. The car is 2 years older, 80k on the clock and I have covered 2k towing the sterling this summer? First class would recommend. Economy good, power plenty, top gear 5th easy 50 ~ 60mph and more if needed to get out of trouble. What I don't understand is! how many families are driving @ 70mph + sorry folks that sought of speed with any kit is a NO NO!

WE have a 2002 Mondeo estate 2.0 TDDI, this car tows our unit like a dream you don't even know you are towing it! Economy is brilliant, tons of power, our caravan is a lightweight older (abbey piper ) van , laden still doesn't exceed 850kg (as we went to a weighbridge) so even this review isn't totally accurate as we'd get even better results. I don't know why more people don't consider this car as a caravan workhorse, cheap to pick up all in all a brilliant car.

Solo it holds road well and pulls from as low as 1500 revs. rarely need to exceed 2500 revs, which ain 6th. is over 60mph. tows effortlessly Seems stable probably due to the firm suspension, and on motorway hills very rarely needs below 5th gear. Too early to arrive at fuel consumption towing but solo is around 40 mpg around home and 50 on long motorway trips.

Well what can i say, stick it in 6th and it will go anywhere. The pulling power and torque are unbelievable. It can be a tad bouncy buts that doiwn to it being the ST model with firm suspension.10/10

Cracking engine power but can struggle on steep hill pull aways until you get going then its fantastic. we have an Abbey Impression 520 which is not listed on here with the alco stabilizer. I've found to get the best balance is to put anything heavy over the caravan axle rather than the car boot, this stopped the car bounch dramatically due to hard suspension. As for fuel economy solo average about 42mpg towing about 27mpg.

Struggled towing for years with a 2002 1.8i16v Vauxhall Vectra, but recently bought a 2005 2.2 Tdci Mondeo Ghia X. This car is just truly perfect for towing, there is bags of tourque and it was a dream to tow with. On motorways put it into 6th and set the cruise control and away you go, I only ever need to use 5th on steep inclines. I get around 42mpg without the caravan and around 27mpg towing with full load including 2 bikes and a kayak on the roof bars. Neither power nor fuel economy is affected by using the air conditioning whilst towing. I would recommend this car to anyone who wishes to tow a caravan, brilliant!

Absolutely fabulous. No matter what the gear is, it just pulls, and boy does it pull...with 196bhp and 480Nm torque I don't even feel the caravan coming along... Not much to say about fuel consumption when towing, but every litre I fill up, is well used... :D
Then again, it's the same without the caravan...

First week towing, some 500 mainly motorway miles. Found 5th best and returned 39mpg overall. The car tows very well especially when the major weight items were over the caravan axle. The boot was empty save for our dog. Very stable and acceleration when needed was excellent.

My van is in fact the Avante 630 which is 40kg lighter than the nearest selectable choice it tows fine, its a touch heavy but I have been towing for 20 years. It requires a bit of clutch managment from a standing start on a steep incline and forget 6th gear for most of the time. I seldom go over 50mph, never over 60mph and would not hesitate to recomend this combination to expirienced drivers prepared to drive carefully.

towing with this outfit is brilliant, motorway work is brilliant, can easily keep at 60mph. Overtaking can be good even in 6th gear, on slight inclines when taken lorries and anything large, needs to drop to 5th but again no problems. Can easily go over limit so be carefull with this!! Will need steady clutch work from start when on slopes or wet grass, but once started easily gets to max speed. Outfit is steady solid calm on road side winds when strong can be scary but with care like any outfit no issues

The vans very stable, but ths may be down to the Alko ATC system that it came with.

Absolutely superb towing capability this car has! Bags of grunt and torque for towing. I towed with the 2.0l equivelant and that was pretty good too. Mine is a 55 reg 2.2 tdci Titanium X with 110k on the clock now so getting on a bit, and we've just taken our heavily laden 2004 Bailey Ranger 500\5 from Manchester to Somerset for a week. The car didn't miss a beat, or slow down on any of the steep hills. I tend to leave it in 5th gear and use cruise control to stick to just above 60 on the speedo to make good progress and not hold anyone up. Take-up from standstill, mid-range acceleration and cruising are effortless.

The car will pull this load fairly comfortably once established, pulling away on a slope needs 1800rpm and clutch slip to get a smooth pull away, this is due to the turbo coming in at these revs. Have chipped the car which has given an easier pull away.
Will be looking to get a 2lt Auto Estate next time.

A good solid tow on the moterway, at times you don't know its there. starting on a slope requires a bit of clutch slip as this model does hesitate at low revs with a load due to turbo lag. I get between 31 and 36 mph with this rig towing depending on road and wind conditions. I would go for a 2ltr next time I think

i purchased a 2008 petrol mondeo 2 ltr 5speed manual to tow my swift charisma 555 the caravan is just below the towing limit stated by ford for this vehicle.
on the open road towing was superb but when i had to stop on a slight incline i had to give it an enormouse amount of revs and spin the wheels to get away
when i went on holiday i had to reverse the caravan up a slope onto the pitch,to manage this i had to slip the clutch to such an extent that the local ford dealer remarked on the clutch smell when i took it to them the following week
although Ford Motor Company state that this vehicle will tow 1500 kg they will not replace the clutch when it is burnt out by pulling away on inclines this is not covered by the warranty
unfortunately i am now selling mine as i have no intention of getting stranded with a burnt out clutch
I WOULD NOT RECOMEND ANY ONE TO BUY THIS CAR FOR TOWING

Would reccomend to anyone + low maintenence with the advantage of a timming chain( instead of the ever so unfortunateley hapenning timming belt snap on other vehicles). just recentley i have done cornwall= 400 miles there at a reasonable 40mpg(on diesel) at approx 60mph Excellent MOTOR,i'am well pleased with here..

A pleasure, excellent performance, just set the cruise and forget. (2.0tdci) Rear suspension a little soft, either opt for sports or as I have done, fit rear spring assistors. We also carry 2x cycles on a tow bar mounted carrier with ease. Excellent tow car, miles better than the BMW I used previously.

Our Mondeo TDCI 130bhp was initially a brilliant tow car for our ABI & within the 85% rule - Nothing seem to be a problem , UNTIL the turbo blew up traveling at 55mph on the A14. The RAC were brilliant with their recovery services - The Turbo replacement cost over 1500 & we no longer have the confidence to tow with the Ford Mondeo

Very interested in Pauls comment. Our mondeo TDCI 130bhp has also been brilliant until three weeks ago when the turbo blew on the A420 at 50mph. Green flag assisted us with a brilliant rescue service. Likewise I have lost confidence with the Mondeo. \So disapointed and broke

Last August my wife and I went out for a cup of coffee, bought a caravan magazine and, that afternoon, bought an Eldiss Xplore 452! We had last owned a caravan 16 years earlier.
In September we set off for a 3-week holiday in France. Our car was a Mondeo 1.8 petrol. We had no problem towing but the hills made driving somewhat hard-work-lots of gear-changing. I decided to make the change to a Mondeo 2.0 diesel. I thought the change would be marginal. In fact, it is hugely significant, We have just had another 3 weeks in France towing 1650 miles up hill and down dale. 30 mpg and hardly a gear change. I consulted What towcar before I bought the 2.0 TDCi and it was top class advice.I would recommend the car unreservedly.

Mondeo is a superb towcar. Pulls up motorway hills with ease. Gives 28 mpg on long motorway pulls but over 31mpg towing on A class roads. Very stable. Will tow in 6th gear on flat but easier in 5th. Power and stability to accelerate past lorries on motorways and then drop back to 60mph cruise. Enormous boot capacity for carrying equipment. I bought mine 1 year old to avoid heavy first year depreciation.

Have taken delivery of new car and caravan within the last 3 months and am absolutely delighted with both! The combination works a treat, the Mondeo performs better at on road towing than my old Discovery. Recently went to Cornwall and the rerurn trip from Falmouth to Cirencester took dead on 4 hours, no stopping, cruise control set at 63mph and was very relaxing with the auto box, can highly recommend.

Mondeo ST 2.2 TDCi Estate 2007 pilling a new Bailey Pageant Series 7 Limousin.
Rock solid performance. The self levelling suspension on the Mondeo performs brilliantly.
Caravan has ALKO hitch & stabiliser. Caravan also has new ATC electronic trailer control for extra safety.
Towed around 300 miles round trip at around 55-60mph. Both trailer and car sat very comfortably despite the odd juggernaut or mad 4X4 towing idiot passing at 75mph.

I am delighted with the performance and although well above the limits some would consider, felt that the combination was really steady and stable.

Found it difficult to keep the nose weight low enough. Don't load up the fromt locker - you'll end up with 120kg on the nose at first attempt like me.

Watch the nose weight!! Store your stuff in the bathroom or under the fixed double bed. Nose weight seemed most comfortable at around 80-90kg.

One word of caution - the Limousin only allows loads of 211kg above the tare weight to give around 1572kg all up - DON'T EXCEED THIS. It pays to keep the lovely light chassis light - and it turned in 35mpg on my trip.

I cannot fault my Mondeo 2.2 for the towing my caravan Swift Challenger 510, we have been to many countries in Europe and the average MPG is 28.4 in tow. I set my cruise control to 60mph and to make life easier for my Mondeo I never go in sixth gear , my RPM remains on a constant 1800 RPM,thus giving me plenty of power in reserve should I need to get out of a messy situation or overtake in the least possible time.

I have a 130bhp 03 plate Mondeo Tdci Ghia X and have just bought a Mondeo 140BHP Tdci estate Ghia on an 08 plate.
All I can say is, I thought the 130BHP Mondeo was good at towing my Abbey Vogue 540, but the new Mondeo is in a class of it's own. It is a true pleasure to drive, acceleration comes in buckets, it is so stable when towing even at the higher speeds with a cross wind. You will have difficulty keeping to speed limits as it has bags of power and just wants to pull all the time. 6th gear towing is a bit better than the 03 Mondeo but it really likes only up to 5th gear. Fuel consumption is about the same as my other Mondeo and returns 35-40 mpg when towing on Motorways and 30-35mpg on A roads. I can see why it has been voted best Towcar for 2 years straight. I think it will be up there next year as well.

The Mk4 Mondeo is a fantastic tow car. In estate form it sits beautifully planted on the road and feels very stable. You never feel you are not in control of the van.

There's plenty of power and torque too, and 30mpg towing with bikes on the roof too!!

Oh, and if you're thinking of a big 4x4 instead, bear in mind that if you want to have a roof load like family bikes, then it's a lot easier to get them on the roof of an estate car.

I know this site calculates the ratio to be high and only gives it 4.5 stars, but I think it's an excellent combination.

Actually towing an Xplore 474 at this weight. Mondeo had plenty of power, very easy to slip past 60mph, and the autobox made low speed work easy too. Biggest complaint was suspension seemed too low at the back, even grounding the towbar when pulling off from a slight down slope onto an upward cambered road. With the autobox, 25-30mpg.

Strangely, despite being heavier than previous 'van (see review of same car with Elddis Xplore 474), this was a very good outfit match indeed. The outfit was very stable, even with crosswinds or passing HGVs. There was no lack of power either.

Unlike with the Elddis, the back end of the Mondeo was not especially weighed down. In fact, I had to add ballast (in the form of an awning) to the front of the Bailey to increase the noseweight a bit!

A very good combination indeed.

Only had two trips with this outfit, so it's early days but first impressions are really good. The last trip we covered about 140miles, mainly dual carriageways with some A roads in very, very strong winds in 3hrs (average speed around 47mph for trip) without any concerns. I would suggest fitting a detachable tow bar with the designated electrics loom. I had this fitted at Genisis Towing Centre in Telford and are very professional people to deal with. I tow a 2 birth Bailey Unicorn Seville Maximum Weight 1433Kg. My 2011 Ford Mondeo Estate is the 2.0 Tdci, 163 bhp, with an automatic power shift gearbox. The Mondeo tows the Caravan effortlessly. This is the best tow car I have ever owned. It would be easy to forget that you are towing a caravan behind the car. The power of the car is more than enough to accelerate comfortably and you never have to slow down on motorway or dual-carriageway hills. It is also very stable, crosswinds and overtaking lorries do not affect stability. There is also a huge amount of storage space in the Mondeo. I would definitely recommend the Mondeo estate 2.0tdci as a great tow car.

We have towed with the 130bHp Mondeo estate but it always felt underpowered. This 2.2. engine is a good match for the power and torque available. I haven't modified the suspension in any way i.e. doughnuts , springs etc. and the outfit handles well.

We,ve had a 2008 Mondeo 2.2 diesel [172bhp] estate for 5 years and towed 3 different "vans". Compass Corona, Elldis Avante 540 and now a Elldis Affinity 530. Great towcar with loads of pulling power. Has been VERY reliable.
6 speed manual gives 29-31 mpg whilst towing {with careful use of throttle]. Would buy another .

this result is about right the mondeo does struggle up even a modest slope ,you have use third gear a lot and the rear suspension is really low ,you need to take off the jockey wheel.progessive springs would probably help.

I agree with Henrik. This is not as hard in reality. My Mondeo -02 wagon 146Hp manages a 6 meter 1600 kg Caravan. Even on mountain roads in Norway. Shure a diesel is better, but the petrol is fully usable.

Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 DOHC Zetec with a Avondale

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 87%* = 99 km/u = 9%

I once owned a 1998 S reg estate 2.0ltr and on solo work it could not fault it. But when i had the caravan attached a Avondale Dart 510/5, the outfit was very unstable. There was alot of bounce and sway from the rear, so much i had to stop quite a few times to re-arrange the payload just so i could try and get a safe outfit. Acceleration with the caravan was not to brilliant and did struggle up hill alot. On the flat it was fairly ok but again took it's time to reach 60mph. Overtaking vehicles as small as a van caused a few problems, and when a lorry or coach passed there was alot of gear work to try and regain the speed. The outfit was @ the 83/85 mark well within british guidlines, but needed work

I have towed a fully laden Coachman Amara 520/4 for the past year and the performance has been fantastic, with more than enough grunt to make for a relaxed journey. Fuel economy drops to approx 36mpg from 45/7 normally.

Have borrowed one of these a couple of times and been very happy with their performance. Fuel economy was good, even with the auto. Not as easy to tow as our normal car( VW TOURAN) but that's due to it not having traction control and being an auto.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 79%* = 100 km/u = 20%

We have been towing this unit for about a year now. The Mondeo pulls like a train and is very stable. I have not really measured fuel economy but anything is better than out last tow car (Subaru Forester). Although the Forester was better than the Mondeo on damp grassy hills I have only had difficulty getting off a pitch once with the Mondeo when the traction control just would not let be get any power down onto the mud. I would recommend the Mondeo as a tow car but at this age just lookout for suspension bush issues.

Actually my Abbey is a Vogue 417 GTS (1998) with a MPTLM of 1300 kgs,so I selected a 217 from your lists to simulate the same towing characteristics. The Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Estate is the best towcar I have had for every aspect of towing, and that includes three 4x4's

We own the Ford Mondeo 130 TDCI Estate with 6 forward gears ,and we also own a 2.7 Nissan Terrano ,the Mondeo leaves the Nissan standing when our Senator Indiana is hitched , the Terrano is quite sluggish when driven solo ,hitch 1.5 tons on the back and you can see its going to be no flyer ,so we normally use the Mondeo all summer and the terrano in the winter ,another good thing about the Mondeo is the fuel economy ,i have to drive along the M4 on mondays and keeping the car in 6th gear as much as possible and doing about 60 mph i can get 64 mpg over a distance of a 130 miles driving solo ,so if you want plenty of towing performance and a good solo drive the Mondeo is for You

Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] with a Caravan

I tow a Swift Challenger 480SE with a 2-litre Mondeo TDCi 130. The Mondeo is a brilliant towcar. It pulls the van with ease, uphill and down dale (the 6-speed box helps). It will hold 6th on motorways, even with a moderate gradient, and return around 30mpg at legal speeds (without the van, 40 round town and 50+ on a run). In comparison with my previous tug, a Discovery Td5 auto, it is brilliant and I don't regret selling thr 4x4 at all - it was sluggish and spent most of its time in 3rd gear, and returned around 20mpg with the van behind. At nearly a tonne heavier, it was slightly more stable in crosswinds, but not enough to tempt me back. Mondeo highly recommended. With or without the caravan on the hook, it is an excellent drive - torquey and quick.

Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] with a Avondale

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 87%* = 100 km/u = 17%

I recently bought an Avondale Dart 630-6 and the 2-litre Mondeo tdci pulls it with no strain at all,but you need to keep it in 5th gear for best performance as engaging 6th gear at the uk speed limits does not give you any acceleration response if needed for emergency it was really stable in cross winds

Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] with a Bailey

The Mondeo has plenty of power in normal towing conditions, but we have been in trouble on 2 ocassions when the site road is more gravely and not on the level and on one ocassion we needed a push!. The second ocassion was our own fault and went up a narrow steep bendy hill in Devon, where we missed the the correct turning. Motorway driving no prob.

Having pulled my Swift Challeger 540 throughout western EU I cannot fault it. Brilliant pull-away at all stops, and that includes hill-starts. Motorway driving enables 6th gear over 55mph and other driving on continent enables 32+mpg overall - best tow car I've ever had and that doesn't mention the boot space - excellent!

no problem towing as long as u use comensense dont overload caravan as you are towing around 90 percent at max caravan load but we never load van to full weight mondeo tows very well flys up hills in third and fourth gears good overtaking at 40 to 60 mph can reduce caravan weight if no leisure battery and light designed gas bottles

I bought an Elddis odessey 634 2010 twin axle,1725KG. pulls and stops like no tomorrow!. Had a 4,0 ltr Range Rover before and did'nt tow our smaller van as good as the Mondy. Fantastic bit of kit.

Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] with a Bailey

N Francis reviewed a Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] (96 Kw/129 bhp). Modelyear: september 2003 - june 2007) and a Bailey Pegasus 534 of 1466 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 95%* = 95 km/u = 18%

I use this Ford Mondeo to tow my Bailey Pegasus 534. The car tows the van with ease and maintaining a 55-60mph on flat roads is easy using 5th gear. The car can struggle with inclines if you use the 6th gear. The stability is very good, but you will feel the effect in strong winds as with all cars. I feel this is a good match and have had no issues towing the Pegasus.

Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] with a Adria

Stuart reviewed a Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] (96 Kw/129 bhp). Modelyear: september 2003 - june 2007) and a Adria Adora Danube 642 UP of 1600 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 102%* = 95 km/u = 17%

I have used my Mondeo for towing the Adria since trading in (a much lighter) caravan two years ago. In this time I have done three 3,000 mile trips to SW Spain and a similar trip to the south of France as well many other shorter journeys. The Mondeo is fine in most circumstances having a good strong engine that copes well with the caravan. As the weight ratio is poor with this match I try and carry as much weight as possible in the car. Under more demanding conditions the Mondeo struggles a bit. 6th gear is rarely used and it tends to overheat on longer hills. A replacement clutch tends to point to the fact that I'm pushing it a bit with a caravan of this size. The mondeo's replacement will be a heavier, more powerfull car

Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] with a Lunar

Ian reviewed a Ford Mondeo Wagon - 2.0 TDCi [6MT] (96 Kw/129 bhp). Modelyear: september 2003 - june 2007) and a Lunar Lexon EB of 1370 kg.

The towing capability for this outfit is:
= 89%* = 96 km/u = 19%

I have used the Mondeo for 4 summers first pulling a Lunar Jupiter and this year with the Lunar EB. It has not missed a beat. It has sufficient power to pull the odd overtake, passed a VW camper up an overtaking lane in Wales, and passed a few slow cars on A roads. I drive mostly for economy (apart from the odd overtake) and get around 30-32 mpg at 52-55 mph in 5th gear, with up to 60 mpg solo. A 4x4 might pull better up hill on wet grass but I have yet to go to a site where the owner would not help us if we needed them to in order to avoid damaging the site.
